'Biotechnology - the making of a global controversy', a new book edited by Martin W Bauer and George Gaskell, was published in September 2002 by Cambridge University Press.

Life Sciences in European Society (LSES) is a collaborative research network of social scientists brought together to investigate biotechnology in the public sphere. There are 19 participating laboratories in fourteen European countries (Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Netherlands), with associated laboratories in the USA and Canada. The project is co-ordinated by George Gaskell and Martin W. Bauer at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Life Sciences in European Society is funded under the European Union Fifth RTD Framework Programme (Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources Programme, contract QLG7-CT-1999-00286)
